ESA Summer of Code in Space 2016 S1TBX Ideas
The ESA SNAP S1TBX team is applying to become a mentoring organization in the ESA Summer of Code in Space programme. We hope to find the brightest and most creative student open source developers to help us add new and exciting possibilities to SNAP and the Sentinel-1 Toolbox.
ESA Summer of Code in Space 2016 (SOCIS 2016) is a program run by the European Space Agency. It aims at offering student developers stipends (4000 Euros) to write code for various space-related open source software projects. Through SOCIS, accepted student applicants are paired with a mentor from the participating projects, thus gaining exposure to real-world software development scenarios. In turn, the participating projects are able to more easily identify and bring in new developers.
We are looking for intermediate level Java developers from undergrads to PhD’s with some experience with geospatial software.
Proposed projects must be achievable within the limited project timeline.
Students have until 15 May 2016 to apply.
Below are some suggested ideas or submit your own idea. Please complete a two page proposal describing what you intend to do, how you will achieve it and why you are best suited for the job.
1) Develop basic tools for statistical analysis, machine learning, segmentation, feature extraction and classification or integrate from existing open source libraries such as RapidMiner, Weka, Mahout, DL4J, etc.
2) Enhance the GIS capabilities of SNAP with integration from other Java GIS software such as Geotools, Geolatte, JTS, etc. Improved vector handling, additional vector format import/export with OGR, etc.

3) Support for a targeted application area such as ice classification, environmental monitoring, monitoring of surface movement, ocean applications, forestry, agriculture, security, ship classification etc. Develop enhancements for the application area and create tutorials to showcase the application.

4) Further integrate NASA WorldWind into SNAP adding support for new capabilities. Implement some example applications combining WorldWind and SNAP EO features.

5) Include new InSAR functionality for SBAS, PSI or atmospheric correction through development of new tools or improved integration with existing open source tools such as GIAnT, STAMPS or TRAIN.
