Product Reader Development for SNAP

Whether you are an end-user who wants to use data that is not yet supported by ESA’s SNAP toolboxes, or you are a 3rd-party satellite operator or a data distributor who wants to make your data compatible with SNAP’s rich functionality and user-friendly interface, the SNAP API has a so-called Plug-In point for new Product Readers. You can familiarize yourself with the API and develop your own plug-in.
The following show some reader implementation examples of different complexity:

In case you are not a developer or need your solution quickly, the SNAP developer team can help you. Please note that, in general, ESA is not financing the development of support for non-ESA missions. You would need to cover the costs for the development yourself.
To order the development of a Product Reader for SNAP, the following input would be needed from you:

  • A product specification document describing the data format. The reader will be implemented based on this specification.
  • A test data set with products covering the variations of the data format. This allows us to verify that the Product Reader is compatible with your specific data.
  • For SAR data, a calibrator is needed. Documentation on how to convert dn to sigma0, beta0, gamma0 must be provided.

A custom Product Reader developed by the SNAP developer team will be licensed under the GNU General Public License version 3 (GPLv3). If you intend to make the reader available for public use, the source code will be made publicly available as well. If you prefer to keep the reader private and for internal use only, the code can be kept private.
Development time for a custom Product Reader typically ranges from ~one week (~5€ ) to four weeks (20k€). This includes development, testing, and documentation. Due to the varied and complex nature of data formats, an accurate estimation of the effort for a custom Product Reader development will be done after analysis of the above input. This analysis will be done free of charge.
Depending on the interest of the user to engage in the development phase, the SNAP developer team will work closely together with them to ensure that the user is fully informed of the process and progress throughout the development phase. An optional long-term maintenance will keep the plug-in updated along with changes in SNAP and the evolution of the input data.
